WebFiber artist Kay Parker learned Ravenstail weaving in 1990 from Kathy Rado and has studied extensively with master weaver Cheryl Samuel. Kay began her love of fiber arts at the age of 6, when making doll cloths for her “screw dolls” (dolls made from various length flat head screws with clay heads on the pointed end of the screw). WebRavenstail robes are made of mountain goat wool and are adorned with geometric patterns. Steve Henrikson, Curator of Collections at the Alaska State Museum, says this weaving technique died out in the early 1800s. Around that time, an innovation in weaving technique allowed weavers to create curved stitching.

WebJan 1, 1987 · There is a famous portrait of Katlian, Chief of the Kiksatti Clan of the Tlingit Indians of Sitka, Alaska, that shows him wearing a blanket of a design otherwise lost. Weaver Cheryl Samuel spent around a year trying to replicate the pattern, which she named "Raven's Tail." It is a bold black-and-white symmetrical design completely unknown today. Weba newer weaving style known as Chilkat became popular. However, a weaver named Cheryl Samuel studied very old Ravenstail robes stored in museums around the world and started weaving in this unique style in the 1980s. Kay Field Parker is one of several weavers who has dedicated the last 25 years to learning and helping revive Ravenstail.
