Web27 jul. 2024 · A Kushite king, Piye, invaded and conquered Egypt around 730 BCE, expanding his territory to include the whole Nile Valley. Piye became the first of the so-called Black Pharaohs—the Kushite pharaohs of Egypt’s 25 th dynasty who ruled the land for three-quarters of a century, until the Assyrians captured Egypt. Meroë was the southern capital of the Kingdom of Kush. The Kingdom of Kush spanned the period c. 800 BC – c. 350 AD but, initially, its main capital was farther north at Napata. King Aspelta moved the capital to Meroë, considerably farther south than Napata, possibly c. 591 BC, just after the sack of Napata by Egyptian Pharaoh Psamtik II.
